Vote for me
Vote for me
I asked the wall
I have repainted you
And put a crown of razor wire on your crown
I have strengthened your foundations
And guarded you from attacks
Vote for me , I insist
I have uprooted the trees
That may fall on you
Though men eat their fruits
And sleep in their shade
Vote for me
I begged the wall
I have cleared the path
Around your base
Uprooted the shrubs and the grass
Though the sheep feed on them
And the goats browse on them
But the grounds have to be kept
And paths cleared for the soldiers
To parade on
Vote for me
I plead with the wall
I have replaced the bricks with granite blocks
I have polished it to reflect the sun
Now you are a monument to greatness
Vote for me
I pound on this wall
Asking for a nod or even a cough
Look at the history, I say
Which wall has won better awards
Or enriched more contractors
Or uprooted more helpless men
Vote for me
I say
I have cut the ribbon with a golden knife
And removed the veil
From the stone plaque
And from the sphinx with my face on it
I inscribed the adulations in gold
And decorated your frontage
So now,
Vote for me
I ask this wall.
